TWO VEHICLES BURNT, AT LEAST ONE PERSON SHOT DEAD and Harare Central Police Station stoned and heavily damaged by an angry mob
Last night a section of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, broke out into violence as people went on the rampage in clashes between police and commuters in the central business district (CBD).
Harare central police station was heavily stoned by the rioting crowd who shattered the police station entrance with missiles as they protested the death of a man in the capital when the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) approached a Chitungwiza-bound kombi that was dropping passengers at Seke Road flyover and an altercation ensued, soon turning into running battles and eventually the police firing teargas canisters to restrain the growing mob of people baying for their blood.
Several warning shots were fired by the police and one person died. The angry crowd latter reassembled at Harare ZRP Charge Office and launched a furious tirade of missiles at the station at about 2000 hours while the body of the deceased lay on the floor.
The angry crowd set several vehicles alight outside the police station. The Zimbabwe Government has since reversed the decision to ban kombis from the central business district (CBD), and allow further consultation with passengers, kombi owners and other stake holders.
The Zimbabwe Republic police Commissioner General of Police, T G Matanga in a press conference today at midday offered ZRP’s condolences to the family of the pedestrian who was fatally shot by the police yesterday resulting in violence at ‘ Harare Central Police Charge Office.’
